Group Biography:

Part lo-fi indie quirk, part Badu-style folk-soul, em.KING is the musical duo Ray Archie & Emily C. Chang, an Emmy® Award-winning actress and musician.

Emily Chang and Ray Archie met in New York City in 2004 and soon began writing music together and performing as em.KING. Archie is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, and Chang is classically trained in piano and voice, and a founding member of the influential hip-hop/spoken word group, I Was Born with 2 Tongues.

As a duo, Em.KING first began mashing up spoken word and jazz upright bass, then moved into experimental music, contributing to the soundtracks of several independent films. A grad of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Emily began writing contemporary songs for piano, voice, and guitar as a teenager, influenced by musicians ranging from diverse styles such as Tori Amos and Joan Baez to Sonic Youth and Billie Holliday. Emily's previous work on 2 Tongues’ album “Broken Speak,” (Asian Improv Records) was called “stunning…mesmerizing!” (Davey D, KPFA 94.1 FM- Bay Area); “punch[ing] a hole in the future” (Bob Holman, About.com), and over the years she's performed with seminal acts like the Last Poets, the Beat Junkies, DJ Q-Bert, and The Visionaries.

“Need You Near,” a.k.a. the "Happy Nunchucks Song," is a departure from em.KING’s hip-hop influenced past. The song is featured in the soundtrack of the upcoming feature film Colin Hearts Kay, comprised entirely of Brooklyn indie bands. Emily is currently working on an album of ambient electropop with Chicago's Actually Records, as well as doing a guest track on Actually’s electro covers of Hong Kong Canto-pop songs from the ’80s.
